One of the most popular categories in the open class is amateur photography. Entries will be judged in four different classes based on composition, clarity, and presentation. Photographs can be in black and white or color, depending on the class, and the subjects can include scenery, children, or sports.

All photos must be mounted on black or white poster board and have a maximum size of 11 x 14 inches. Matting is not allowed, but cropping is permitted. Both film and digital photography are accepted in all classes.

Judging will take place on Wednesday of the fair in the Open Class Exhibit Building at 2 p.m. Awards will be given for first, second, third, and fourth places in each category. Exhibitors and fairgoers are welcome to watch the judging process, as the verbal critiques provided are often very helpful. It is recommended to bring a chair, as a large crowd usually gathers to observe.
