The Little Britches Showmanship Contest has been entertaining fairgoers on Sunday of the Dodge County Fair for 25 years, and the Dodge County Dairy Youth Advisory Committee is preparing to celebrate this milestone with a bang.
Jenny Spoke, Waterloo, dairy farmer and 4-H Mom, is organizing the event this year. “ANIMART is sponsoring the show, again, for the 25th time, and we’re going to have special 25th anniversary t-shirts for the exhibitors.”
In addition, Spoke and her committee are looking for exhibitors from the first little britches show to make an appearance. “We’re trying to get that original class from 1994 to come back and be helpers in the ring. If you know of someone in that class, please e-mail me at dodgecountyDYAC@gmail.com.”
Five different classes are featured in this entertaining and adorable showcase, starting with youth going into 4K and finishing with third grade. “Cassie Endres, Lodi, is the judge this year,” noted Spoke. “In addition, each child will be announced when they enter the ring; dairy youth exhibitor, Matthew Gunst, has agreed to do this.”
The Little Britches Showmanship Contest will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday of the fair in the Farm Progress Arena. Calves in this year’s show have May or June, 2018, birth dates and will feature several of the major dairy breeds, such as Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn. Holstein will be the most popular breed presented.
Other Sunday events include the Pernat Haase Meats Four-Wheel-Drive Truck Pull at 9 a.m.; demo derbies at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.; pig, duck, and goat races from Pleasure Valley Farm; the Kandu Magic Show farewell tour; Wild World of Animals; and much more. All this entertainment is free with paid gate admission to the fair.
The Dodge County Fair is scheduled for Aug. 15-19, 2018.
